It is not easy being Shane MacGowan, but as long as the talent has not been alcohol dissolved, everything seems to be normal. The Irish Drunk has rosen, after the break with the Pogues five years ago. And if you are cruel, it was Shane who was the Pogues. This time it's the Popes who help him standing - also musically. Yes, we got what we came for: Songs about whiskey and women. The concert started off with "Streams of Whiskey" and continued with "If I Should fall from Grace with God". The gig developed to be a journey in the early Pogues days. It was folk 'n' rock 'n' roll for all your drinking money. Although the mike was good to lean on, the rock's thirstiest roller was oppegaende. The most important, Shane complete. A good concert with Shane is never musically perfect. But yesterday it was too much out of tune, not enough variation, and a bit too many and long "meetings" on stage. When you talk about Shane, words like diction are nonsense, but the pronounciation could've been better. Shane released last year the album "The Snake" with the Popes as backingband - a release which received good critics. The expression is very macgowanesque, and sounds like early Pogues with a punk rock attitude. The music is full of energy, and so is the band. But it was the audience who had the raw energy, and were partying. And when people went home, they all agreed that it'd been a pleasant evening.
