Pogues again fail to top charts

As The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl failed to make the number one spot on the British pop chart published today, it was confirmed that dozens of disappointed fans had telephoned the BBC to complain that the London-Irish band was not featured on the Christmas edition of Top of the Pops.

The haunting song, "Fairytale Of New York", remained at the number one spot for the second week in succession. It failed to dislodge the Pet Shop Boys who have now been three weeks on the top with their version of "Always On My Mind".

A spokesman for the band said they had been disappointed not to have a video or tape of Shane and Kirsty featured on the Christmas Day edition of Beeb's highly-rated music show.

"It is always a help to feature on Top of the Pops. It does boost sales", he said. "We know that many fans were annoyed enough to contact the BBC and let their feelings be known."

Traditionally a top-selling record on the upward curve like "Fairytale" would be promoted on the Corporation's pop music flagship. But a spokesman for the band's label Stiff Records said that any boost in sales from such an appearance would have been too late to register in this week's listings.

The Gallup poll commissioned for the BBC and Musik Week and released today showed that the top three placings remain unchanged from last week. Kim Wilde and Mel Smith remain at number 3 with "Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree". Nat King Cole's original version of "When I Fall in Love" ws at four having passed out Rick Astley's cover version which dropped to number 7.
