Shane McGowan, the Pogues lead singer, has organised a special ceremony to honour Tipperary's winning All-Ireland hurlers later this week in the sleepy village of Silvermines, near Nenagh.

Liam Gleeson, chairman of Sivermines GAA club, confirmed that "Shane McGowan himself came up with the idea" of presenting a cup to the Tipperary County Board to celebrate the county's achievement in bringing home the Liam McCarthy cup.

"This whole thing is getting far bigger than we had planned. We never expected so much interest," said Mr Gleeson, of the dozens of phone calls he has received about the presentation to be held in a local pub.

He said the reason that the Pogues singer had brought the cup and deceided on Silvermines as the venue, was that his mother and father have recently moved to the village. His father, Maurice, had asked Mr. Gleeson to present it.

A big crowd is expected in Silvermines this Thursday when the cup will be presented to Mr. Noel Morris, chairman of the Tipperry County GAA Board in Carey's pub. It is understood that some members of the Tipp team will be present. However, the Pogues will not be present, as they will have other commitments.
