A night for real jokers in city of peace

Last Thursday night's Hot Press Music Awards' celebrations in Belfast appeared to have gone swimmingly given the night that was in it. But God bless the power of recorded tv to cut out the good bits.

AWARD!
Receiving an award for being the quintessential Irish Rover, Shane McGowan dedicated it to the best known Sinn Fein negotiators, Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams. Meanwhile Bono told a joke that went over most people's heads. "What is the difference between George Michael and the Rev. Ian Paisley?" he asked, "George Michael will talk to anyone." It went over my head too.

STARS
Curiously enough, despite the well orchestrated efforts of all involved in farce with an old school deejay beating out rock and roll classics from the '50s and '60s in the Europa hotel's Paradise Lost club. This was despite the presence of award winning djs like Dublin's Johnny Moy or Belfast's David Holmes, Bono, Adam Clayton, Morrisey and even Sinead O'Connor.
