I feel I must reply to the letter from B. Nolan (The Irish Post, October 18). The writer seems to be ashamed to be Irish, frightened of how the British view us.
The TV documentary on Shane MacGowan showed what a special talent he is and Ireland should be proud to be connected to such a poetic genius. People of his talent are so rare, only one in every generation come our way. But all seem to live in a traditional way - Mangan, Joyce, Behan, the list is endless.
I'm sure MacGowan is used to such critical abuse but B. Nolan's comments seem so full of ignorance. To say his work has "no sense, melody or rhyme" reveals someone with little knowledge of history and little feeling. In fact so shallow is B. Nolan's observation, he failed to notice it was a BBC documentary, not Channel 4.
