Shane MacGowan was pelted with missiles by angry fans when he arrived an hour late for a gig in Manchester. The former Pogues front man, who turns 40 on Christmas Day, was booked to perform numbers from his new album The Crock Of Gold.
But the audience decided Shane's performance was a crock of something else and shouted at him to leave the stage. Plastic cups were thrown.
Shane, once dubbed the ugliest man in music, is legendary for his boozing and brawling. He was kicked out of the Pogues after he got so drunk that he fell from the tour bus. But earlier this year he vowed to turn over a new leaf and cut back on the drinking.
But ungrateful fans in Manchester weren't convinced he had managed to stick to his resolution - I'm told that Shane was a little shaky on his feet and had trouble speaking to the audience.
Perhaps we could put that down to nerves by student officer Yvonne Byrne says: "He was barely able to speak, although when he eventually did start singing everyone was happy enough. But when people were kept waiting there was a near riot. A plastic glass hit him but he didn't seem to notice or care much."
Shane, who counts Johnny Depp as one of his drinking partners, is no stranger to controversy. He was once ordered off a British Airways flight when he flashed at staff and other passengers.
