The Best Of The Rest

Source: Q magazine

Shamelessly plugging the product gap with a second The Pogues compilation before the dust has settled on the first Best Of collection, product-frenzied company execs may have ensured that this record has difficulty finding too many happy homes. It loses further points for some seemingly arbitrary selections like Young Ned Of The Hill, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and Hell's Ditch. Despite the particularly annoying non-chronological sequencing, this is nevertheless another opportunity to marvel at Shane MacGowan's Barmy Army at their brilliant, brutal, poignant, shambolic best. There's also songs like The Old Main Drag and The Boys From The County Hell which confirm MacGowan as a major songwriting talent of the '80s, and their ghastly version of Honky Tonk Women.
