Celtic rocker Shane MacGowan, who as frontman of the Pogues scored hits like "Streams Of Whiskey," disappointed German fans when he was unable to present his new CD after a drinking session in an Irish pub in Cologne.
The Bild daily said on Friday MacGowan had been due to get up on stage on Wednesday night at the Jameson's Distillery Pub and singing numbers from his "Crock Of Gold" CD. But, picturing MacGowan nursing a pint of stout under a headline: "Concert downed -- three times over the limit, " Bild said the singer had been in no fit state to perform.
Landlord Vincent Gregory said MacGowan had been touring Germany with members from his new band the Popes to promote the disc and had not slept in three days. "I think the whole trip had taken it's toll," Gregory told Reuters. "He was a bit under the weather -- at least a bit more than usual."
MacGowan, whose rotting teeth and dishevelled appearance have become trademark, has a reputation as a heavy drinker and is said to be particularly partial to a glass of vermouth. A pint glass, that is. But Gregory denied that the singer of the classic "Dirty Old Town" had let down over 100 fans, adding that he had at least been able to sign autographs.
"He was going in slow motion, but he did manage to sign some," Gregory said.
