Shane MacGowan Alive and Well........

Shane MacGowan headlined Johnny Deep's Viper room in Hollywood last night (Saturday, May 13,1995). The show was recorded by British T.V. for a show called 'A Drink With Shane MacGowan'. Opening group Los Lobos were great! East L.A. roots music and the blues. Doing a few songs with them including 'Stormy Monday' was the L.A. blues man Jimmy Witherspoon.

Staying with the blues Shane and Los Lobos performed 'Little Bitty Pretty One' and 'We Better Get out of this Place'. Los Lobos finished their set and a local blues band, The Home Wreckers, warmed up. Shane sang a few more blues numbers including; 'Mellow Down Easy' and 'Baby Please Don’t Go' then left.

Shane is a pretty good blues singer. He never missed a beat though typically, he missed the stage on his way up. Soaked his cigarette with his drink and spent most of the set trying to open a new pack to light another. He appeared shaky, loaded and did not look to be spending much time in the California sun.

It was a real disappointment that, after spending two hours waiting to get in, dealing with the Viper Room's elitism that one of the best song writers around did not sing any of his own songs. Shane is a great Irish singer, but just a good blues singer. There are lots better.

Shane left his Irish at home.... Hopefully he will return with an Irish band to support the record that is supposed to be released next month.
