ANDIPA GALLERY STAGES SHANE MACGOWAN’S “THE ETERNAL BUZZ & THE CROCK OF GOLD EXHIBITION”

Taking place at Andipa Gallery, London and curated by Shane’s wife Victoria Mary Clarke, “The Eternal Buzz & The Crock of Gold Exhibition” brings together 21 previously never seen works to both critical and commercial acclaim.

Shane MacGowan’s work, which has been described by the art critic, Waldemar Januszczak, as possessing a ‘demented, wild, fascinating, scabrous kind of energy’, is represented by 21 small-scale drawings mostly dating from the 1980s in our current exhibition. Dubbed by Januszczak as the ‘Jackson Pollock of the biro’, this survey, which has been curated by Victoria Mary Clarke, is drawn from a body of work that has never been shown in public before. Executed in a variety of media, predominantly coloured felt tip and biro, these highly idiosyncratic and sometimes disturbing drawings are scrawled and scribbled onto sheets of paper torn from foolscap jotter pads, hotel stationery and aeroplane sick bags, and were created largely whilst he toured the world with his band, The Pogues.

Spanning over 4 decades of creativity, the works show Shane at his brilliant best with many inspired by his time in both The Pogues and The Popes. Due to its success, the exhibition has been extended until 5 November.
